Breeder in the Spotlight – CJ Orchids.
In addition to our own propagation, Sion closely collaborates with a number of other breeders. Sion promotes and sells the varieties they breed both at home and abroad. We spoke to one on these breeders: Riny van den Heuvel works for CJ Orchids.
A feel for new things
Riny van den Heuvel (30), a breeder who has worked for CJ Orchids for the past 7 years, introduces himself: ‘I'm married to Malwina, a proud father of two boys and I like playing football during my time off. Over the course of the years, my wide range of interests and feel for new things has led to my passion for breeding Phalaenopsis Orchids’.
Breeding based on your own needs
‘The breeding of CJ Orchids is based on my own needs, I wanted to discover varieties which fit with our breeding methods,’ explains Riny. ‘Our goal is to combine all the good qualities in one or more breeds. These breeds are also suitable for other breeders besides CJ Orchids. This is where Sion was able to help. They were able to draw attention to these breeds worldwide, and they provide us with marketing and sales services. New breeds and experiments are created in close collaboration with my colleague Arie. We discuss the options and results on a weekly basis. Breeding flowers means that my workdays are full of a variety of activities. I like to retain a feeling for my products and that means you can find me in various departments in the business throughout the day: from checking orders, to keeping an eye during the staking process, to providing general advice. Our current focus is on breeding new yellow and purple varieties. One of my favourite tools is Plantscout. Thanks to it, I always have the right data at my fingertips.’
CJ Orchids and Sion are a good match
Riny enthusiastically tells us that: ‘we hope CJ Orchids will be able to fully pick out its own materials by 2023, which is our long-term goal. In fact, despite predictions to the contrary, we currently have 79 approved breeds. My personal favourites are CJ 26: a vivid pink breed with beautiful foliage and the CJ244: this special is a uniform and productive grower. I’ve become extremely passionate about orchids over the years; it’s become a boundless source of inspiration. Furthermore, our visits to Sion and the Sion Trend Lab are invaluable; their personal touch and our pleasant partnership make it a great match. Naturally, there are challenges, like breeding resistant breeds, and durability also plays an important role.’
Maintaining the image of orchids
‘You can constantly reinvent orchids; this means that the future is bright and that the most important thing is to keep maintaining the orchid’s image. I also expect the Big Lips range will continue to develop and Sion, with their knowledge and experience, will obviously play a role in that process’, is the conclusion to Van den Heuvel’s story.

Meet the new trends in orchids at Sion Trend Lab
You’re heartily invited to the Sion Open June Edition.
Get inspired from 7 to 18 June at the Sion Trend Lab in De Lier.
What can you expect? We’ve teamed up with trend translator Sandra Könings to create three brand new trends. Escape the mundane and immerse yourself in a world full of fantasy and romance in our ‘Amazing Orchid Love’ theme. The counterpart to this extravagant theme is ‘True Orchid Love’ where nature meets design: it’s becoming more and more apparent that we’ll have to change the way we’re treating Mother Earth. After all the restrictions and lockdowns, we’re craving cosiness, noise and good times all the more! With the theme ‘Celebrate Orchid Love’, we blend inspiration from all over the world seamlessly with the festiveness of orchids.
To make your visit to Sion Open June Edition as safe as possible, we are working in 2-hour time slots. Please come with no more than 2 people at a time and arrive at the facility no more than 5 minutes before the start.

Sion is taking the next step with a new shareholder Hark Orchids B.V.
As of March, Hark Orchids B.V. acquires 50% of the shares of Sion BV to jointly realise the global growth ambitions of both companies. With this step, the German orchid laboratory Hark and the Dutch Phalaenopsis breeder, Sion, intensify their long-term collaboration. By joining forces, both companies can optimally respond to individual customer requirements and innovative developments in the field of breeding and propagation.
Hark and Sion joining forces
“Joining forces is a very logical step: the different specialties of the two companies complement each other perfectly and our companies have been working together for over 20 years,” said Sion owner, Eric Moor. “Hark is known for its high-quality laboratory propagation and Sion for its distinctive breeding and sales and marketing activities. By combining our skills and coordinating our processes, we can respond even better to individual customer requirements. As a result of the more intensive cooperation, we can also respond faster to market developments. Joining forces is a strategic step in further international growth and with a young generation on board, the continuity of Sion is also guaranteed.” The management of Sion continues to consist of Eric Moor and Ewout van den Dool.

Sion flower dinner 2019 *video
True to tradition we opened the Flower Trials on Tuesday evening with an exclusive dinner for the ornamental chain. The Flower Dinner was all about connecting. All links were to be found at the table for a unique black-and-white menu. Trend translator Sandra Könings connected the latest trends to phalaenopsis during a dazzling trend presentation. Three category managers also talked about their work for a national garden centre, a chain of flower shops and a supermarket formula. This gave the visitor a unique insight into the decision-making process regarding the indoor plants category. During the Dinner and the closing drinks, plenty of discussions and experience was still shared with each other.
